Covid-19 has given me a lot of freed up time and I’ve chosen I’m going to use it well. I registered and began Precision Nutrition’s (PN) Level 1 Coaching course yesterday. This is pretty exciting as it is probably the most reputable nutrition course out there even with recognition from CrossFit HQ. I’m convinced this course will build on the nutritional foundation that I already have and it will help make a better coach. Coaching is about way more than just the nutrition science and I want to be a really good coach, not just one with all the answers.
Over the next little while I intend to share here what I’m learning, how it’s applicable to my life and how it may help you. Hopefully, you find some of this stuff as useful as I do. I’m going to start where PN starts. One of the first few things the PN program asks of both students of the program, and nutrition clients who are being coached is that we learn and commit to taking 5-minute actions. Here’s what that means, how and why it works:
Commit to Five Minute Actions…
It’s the first five minutes of a long run that are the hardest. It’s more difficult to get dressed for the gym than it actually is to work out once you’re there (in fact you may even find you’re enjoying it while you’re doing it!). Thinking about cleaning the house or doing laundry is more aggravating than actually doing it. The first five minutes are the hardest. This is true with just about any difficult or uncomfortable task we need to do. Often once those initial difficult moments are behind us, momentum builds; motivation increases and we may even find ourselves on a roll – before we know it done with that once dreaded task. And if we don’t find ourselves on a roll but just complete our five minutes of work each day, we’re still moving towards the end goal and we’ll still get there eventually. Every little action in the right direction is still moving you in the right direction, while no action moves you nowhere. If you want to meet your goals, start with just 5-minutes of action.
- Figure out what it is you want to do.
- For me, right now it’s getting my bookkeeping done – I’ve been procrastinating for too long!
- Commit to just five minutes of action each day; doing a small but difficult task that moves you towards the end goal.
- For me and my bookkeeping goal 5-minute actions are things like:
- Format the database for 2019 data entry (I do this in Excel)
- Pull out the box of paper receipts
- Organize receipts by date and type
- Gather digital receipts from one specific source, for as many days and as many 5-minute actions needed
- Gathering income & other relevant financial statements
- Do 5-minutes of data entry
- For me and my bookkeeping goal 5-minute actions are things like:
I actually started doing this yesterday by creating the database. By breaking my big task down into little 5-minute actions it already looks and feels easier. I feel a little more motivated to move on to the next five-minute action and I’m excited about getting this shit done – even if it’s just 5-minutes at a time!
The five-minute action plan can be applied to just about anything in life. Want better fitness? Commit to 5 minutes of researching workouts, walking, or biking, or doing squats, each day. Who knows, maybe eventually you’ll want to build on that foundation. Want better nutrition? Commit to five-minutes of researching healthy recipes, or food preparation, or creating a meal plan for the week, or preparing fresh vegetables so they’re in the fridge and ready to eat. Want to be more organized? Take five minutes each day to organize something in your life. You see where this is going. It just takes five minutes. So start there.
