Covid-19 has taught us many things. One of those things for many of us, is that slowing down helps us appreciate and enjoy life on a deeper than we otherwise would.
This is true with the food we eat too.
Many of us eat so quickly we hardly notice whether or not we even enjoy what we’re eating – let alone whether or not our we’re actually hungry as we eat it.
When eating quickly, we tend to eat everything on our plate whether or not our body wants or needs it all. We get so stuck in this pattern that we learn to believe that whatever’s there is the ideal portion size for us. It becomes our norm – even if we’re often actually over eating to uncomfortable levels. That discomfort becomes a negligible, normal part of our daily lives. So much so, we hardly even recognize it as discomfort anymore.
In fact, if you want to gain weight… race against the clock. Eating faster allows (or causes) you to eat more. It takes time for the hormonal signals of a full stomach to register in your brain. If you can beat the clock, you can get more in! If the goal is to lose weight, before you attempt some crazy diet or new nutrition regime, maybe try just slowing down a bit first.
If concentrating on slowly eating doesn’t work for you, maybe try cutting your food into smaller pieces. Take smaller bites. Use a smaller utensil. You might find this does the trick, causing you to slow down unintentionally and leaving you to feel fuller sooner – while savoring every bite.
